This program started in 2019 to assist clients by assuring they have safe and reliable transportation. Public transportation is often not a dependable or practical option for many people to use to get to work, the grocery store, school or life’s other miscellaneous errands.
Our program offers free labor on various car repairs and services as well as honest and helpful advice. Repairs include brakes, alternators, vehicle inspections, body services, axles, wheel bearings, and more.
RBI’s Car Care Program, which provides free expert assessments and labor, is one of just a few being offered in the entire country. We continue to work hard to get the resources to continue to grow this program because we are aware of the tremendous need present in the city of Detroit and surrounding areas for this service.
How Does This Program Work
Our Car Care Program will provide you with a free inspection and repair if possible. We cannot pay for parts, but can provide FREE LABOR! All clients will be required to sign a waiver prior to work beginning on their vehicle.
STEPS FOR CAR CARE
- Come to the Brightmoor Free Store on a Saturday morning when our mechanic is present. Cars will be assessed on a first-come, first-served basis. Email: carcarerbi@gmail.com or text (313) 420-7696 for information on the car care schedule.
- Our mechanics assess a maximum of 5 vehicles on Saturday morning. The first assessment will be seen around 9:00 a.m., but because it is a first-come, first-served program, you may have to arrive well before 9:00 a.m. to receive an assessment. There is no guarantee your vehicle will be assessed after you arrive.
- You must fill out and sign a Work Order and Waiver before any work can begin on your vehicle.
- The mechanic will assess your vehicle and discuss the options with you. There is often a wait to get your vehicle assessed and we ask that you wait patiently.
- If parts are needed, the mechanic will give you information on which part(s) to purchase.
- After you have purchased and received the needed part(s), email carcarerbi@gmail.com or text us at (313) 420-7696 to make an appointment to have your car repaired. Please note that we are only able to communicate with clients via email or text.

Redford Brightmoor Initiative is not responsible for loss or damage to the vehicle or articles left in the vehicle in case of fire, theft, or any other cause beyond their control, or for any delays caused by unavailability of parts. I acknowledge and understand that there are risks and potential liabilities that exist as a result of the maintenance/repair services to myself, my vehicle, occupants of my vehicle and other vehicles, as well as damage to other property. I hereby agree to forever release and discharge any Car Care employees, volunteers, and the Redford Brightmoor Initiative from any and all injuries, claims, liabilities, obligations, disputes, damages, or any cause of action which I may have against each of them arising out of the repairs they are performing on my vehicle at no charge. RBI has the right to select the order in which vehicles are inspected and repaired. Please note that Redford Brightmoor Initiative Car Care Program and United Way – Ride United have partnered to provide clients with car repair services. These clients will be served approximately between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
